Royal Photographic Society Fellowship panel
I became fascinated by the play of light inside a Second World War pillbox. Pillboxes are utilitarian structures, built in haste, to be manned by army personnel to protect our shores from the threat of invasion.
By looking into one such pillbox, through the square observation openings, I have seen shapes and colours projected onto the internal concrete walls. This was particularly noticeable with the sun at a low angle above the horizon. At different times of day, throughout the year, I observed and photographed these changing patterns.
It appears as if the images for this panel were taken from inside the pillbox when infact I was the outside observer. However eighty years ago, I wonder if those army personnel who were originally deployed inside, ever noticed or appreciated these fleeting moments of beauty.
Panel awarded November 2020.
